Yesterday President Obama gave a speech at West Point Military Academy on the United States direction in Afghanistan. The outline of the plan is to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan to ensure that the turn over of power to the Afghan leaders is accomplished. Deployments will begin in the very beginning of 2010 and Obama sent a clear message that troops will start returning home in 18 months. This is a three year initiative to push back against the Taliban and al-Qaeda and return some security to Afghanistan. This is a very big decision for Obama that could easily go in a very bad direction very quickly. I am not sure if a war in Afghanistan is in our nation's best security and financial interest. Obama did make this promise in his campaign, so love it or hate it, he delivered.
